Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase injured his back during the team’s win over the Buffalo Bills this past Sunday, and quarterback Joe Burrow spoke about the issue this week.
“Yeah, I don’t know, we’ll see,” Burrow said when asked about Chase’s status for Week 10, via Russ Heltman of Fan Nation. “We’ll see as the week goes. I don’t really have an answer.”
Chase sustained the injury when he landed hard after trying to pull down a deep throw from Burrow in the Bengals’ 24-18 Week 9 victory. Chase said afterward that he was sore and that he wasn’t sure if he would be able to play the next game. He did not practice on Wednesday.
“Let him do his thing,” added Burrow. “If he feels like he can go then I’m gonna trust him, and he doesn’t, then I’m going to trust him as well. So we’ll see as the game gets closer.”
Chase logged four catches for 41 yards last weekend. On the season overall, he has hauled in 64 receptions for 697 yards and four touchdowns.
The 23-year-old, who a teammate of Burrow’s at LSU, was selected by Cincinnati with the fifth overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
He enjoyed a spectacular rookie campaign, catching 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 scores while playing every game. Last year, injuries limited Chase to 12 contests, but he still managed to snare 87 balls for 1,046 yards while reaching the end zone nine times.
Ja’Marr Chase has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons.
The Bengals have been one of the NFL’s hottest teams, having won four straight games. What’s most impressive about Cincy’s winning streak is that it has defeated the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers (on the road) and the Bills in the process.
Burrow’s improving health has been the driving force behind Cincinnati’s recent play, as he had been dealing with a calf injury during the club’s 1-3 start.
The Bengals will battle the Houston Texans this Sunday.
