3. No Heisman, No Problem
The Heisman Trophy is named after John Heisman, who served as Clemson’s head coach in 1902 and 1903. However, no Clemson Tiger has even won the award, and that won’t change in 2020.
While Lawrence is in a perfect position to win the Heisman Trophy, he’ll fall short of taking home the award this year.
Lawrence is the most talented quarterback in college football, but skill doesn’t always translate to Heisman victories. Andrew Luck finished second in the Heisman voting in 2010 and 2011, losing to less-skilled college quarterbacks both times.
Lawrence also doesn’t produce the ridiculous numbers that garner Heisman consideration. Last year, he threw for 3,665 yards and 36 touchdowns. He ran for 563 yards and nine more touchdowns as Clemson came up one game short of back-to-back titles.
In comparison, Kyler Murray threw for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns during his Heisman season. However, the Oklahoma product set himself apart with 1,001 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns.
Even Jalen Hurts, who finished second in the Heisman voting last year, threw for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns while adding 1,298 yards and 20 more scores on the ground.
Clemson’s superstar quarterback could win the Heisman if he experiences a dramatic increase in passing attempts, but without Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross, that seems unlikely.
