Although Beckham didn’t have a bad season last year, his stats didn’t live up to his standards. He totaled 74 receptions for 1,035 yards, but only hauled in four touchdowns, the second lowest total of his career.
The Browns have a handful of solid weapons on their offense. Jarvis Landry, David Njoku, Kareem Hunt if he’s retained this offseason and Nick Chubb are all Pro Bowl caliber play makers on offense.
There may not be enough to go around for Beckham if this offense is really clicking next season. Although new head coach Kevin Stefanski worked with two high level wideouts in Minnesota with Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, he’ll have even more weapons to work with in Cleveland.
Out of all the play makers on the Browns offense, Chubb easliy had the best season in 2019. He finished with the second-most rushing yards in 2019, totaling 1,494 yards and eight touchdowns.
Retaining Hunt and building around the running game would be the best course of action for Cleveland. Mayfield is at his best when he’s outside of the pocket, it allows him to see clearly down field and make throws he can’t normally make inside the pocket. Establishing the run and utilizing Mayfield on play action passes would help maximize his talent.
Trading Beckham for an offensive lineman and some draft picks would benefit this offense more than if Beckham stayed with the team.
His talent has never come into question, but as soon as things go south for him or his team, he turns into a distraction. If the Browns are serious about turning their franchise around, ridding themselves of drama and distractions like OBJ should be their first order of business.
