Cowboys Kicker Makes Major NFL History In Week 14 Win Over Eagles

Arguably the biggest issue that the Dallas Cowboys faced during their playoff run last season was their kicking woes. Brett Maher, who had produced at a high level previously, melted down at the end of the regular season and in the playoffs.

He was far from the only issue the team had, but not having confidence in your kicker to get the job done makes life more difficult than it has to be for a head coach. The play calling on offense changes when you know you have to put the ball in the end zone as there isn’t a comfortable distance you can get to for your kicker to succeed.

That is where the Cowboys were at with Maher, who missed five extra points in the postseason. In the team’s Wild Card victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he missed a record-setting four extra points.

Heading into the offseason, Dallas knew a change had to be made. They went a sem-untraditional route, landing on Brandon Aubrey. In college, Aubrey was a soccer player at Notre Dame and he transitioned to football when he kicked in the USFL.

NFL News & Rumors: Brandon Aubrey, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys Updates

A 28-year-old rookie, Aubrey’s first impression was not a good one, as he missed his first extra point attempt in the season. However, that can now be chalked up to first kick jitters, as he hasn’t missed much of anything since.

Aubrey has missed two more extra points, going 39-of-42 on the season. But, when called upon to kick field goals, he has been automatic. To this point, he is 30-for-30, which is by far the longest perfect streak without a miss to start a career in NFL history.

On Sunday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles, he that streak was extended by four, as he nailed a quartet of kicks from long-range. Aubrey connected on attempts from 45, 50,59 and 60, making him the first kicker in league history to have multiple 59+ yard kicks in the same game.

What was once a massive weakness for the Cowboys has turned into a strength. Aubrey is a legitimate weapon for head coach Mike McCarthy to lean on, as he is seemingly in range once the team gets over midfield. That is a luxury not many coaches in the NFL are afforded but they would kill to have.
