Darkhorse AFC Team Named As Fit For Bears’ Justin Fields

The Chicago Bears are expected to trade quarterback Justin Fields this offseason, as they own the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft and will probably take USC’s Caleb Williams.

But where will the Bears send Fields?

Teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons have been ruled the most likely destinations for the youngster, with the Las Vegas Raiders also being mentioned.

Could there be a darkhorse club in the mix?

Ben Solak of The Ringer thinks so, naming the Cleveland Browns as a possible landing spot for Fields.

“One landing spot for Fields that I haven’t seen mentioned much anywhere, but that I really like, is Cleveland. I don’t think the Browns have a good quarterback on the roster (see: all of Deshaun Watson’s film since he returned from suspension),” wrote Solak. “They would benefit from a low-risk, high-reward swing on the upside of Fields. If they find a starter in Fields, they can escape out of the back door of what is proving to be a catastrophically bad Watson contract.”

It wouldn’t be the first time the Browns have been linked to Fields, as ESPN’s Seth Walder predicted that Cleveland would swing a deal for Fields last month.

Here is the issue for the Browns: Watson’s entire $230 million contract is guaranteed.

Would Cleveland want to give up on Watson after just two years and pay out that salary? It seems highly unlikely, regardless of whether or not you want to view Watson as a sunk cost.

Also, let’s be fair to Watson: he hasn’t played a full season since joining the Browns yet. He served an 11-game suspension in 2022 for the sexual misconduct allegations, and this past season, he played in just six contests due to a shoulder injury that would ultimately require surgery.

While it’s true that Watson has not looked good when he has been on the field in Cleveland, we are talking about a 12-game sample size. Perhaps we should give Watson a full campaign before writing him off entirely.

Plus, Fields is going to be due big money soon, as well, and he has not yet shown that he can be a legitimate franchise quarterback.

I’m not sure the Browns are going to take another risky swing like that after what they just did with Watson.

It may seem like a cool idea in theory, but the chances of Cleveland trying to trade for Justin Fields seem very slim at this juncture.
