Scouts from the Denver Broncos were reportedly present at the Colorado Mines’ pro day recently to observe quarterback John Matocha, as indicated by local radio personality Miles Dunklin.
Matocha, standing at 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 180 pounds, showcased his skills after completing a notable four-season stint with the Orediggers.
During his tenure, he achieved impressive statistics, boasting a completion rate of 70.1% while amassing 15,006 yards and a remarkable 162 touchdowns, setting an NCAA record. Despite Mines being a small Division II school, Matocha’s accomplishments stand out, especially in comparison to the Division I record held by Case Keenum, who has 155 touchdown passes to his name.
Among other potential draft prospects at the pro day were Mines defensive linemen Kyle Bahnsen and Zach Hester. Additionally, several small-school prospects from the region seized the opportunity to showcase their talents.
Mines’ Division II status means that NFL prospects from the school are relatively rare. However, linebacker Marc Schiechl managed to carve out a professional career, finding success in both the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Arena Football League (AFL) following his graduation.
The history of Mines alumni making their mark in the NFL is sparse, with only two former players making significant appearances before the modern era of the game. Jack Colahan notably played tackle for the New York Yankees (the NFL team, not the MLB franchise) back in 1928, while Lloyd Madden made his mark as a wingback and defensive back for the Chicago Cardinals in 1940.
Despite his collegiate achievements, Matocha is projected to go undrafted later this month. However, the Broncos are reportedly considering him for a rookie training camp invitation.
Additionally, Matocha’s versatility might prompt consideration for a position change, given his impressive rushing statistics of 1,982 yards and 28 touchdowns during his college career. Drawing comparisons to Julian Edelman, who successfully transitioned from college quarterback to NFL wide receiver, Matocha’s potential in a different role remains an intriguing possibility.
