Detroit Lions: 3 Players to Watch in Preseason Week 2 vs. Giants

Ameer Abdullah, Running Back

With the addition of free agent LeGarrette Blount and rookie Kerryon Johnson, many had assumed that Ameer Abdullah would be a fringe player heading into training camp. However, as the preseason has progressed it appears that Abdullah is carving out a nice role for himself despite the new additions at running back.

In his 2018 preseason debut, Abdullah ended up being the star of the running back group. While his stat line only showed four carries for 16 yards, he did manage to score a touchdown. Abdullah showcased his quick footwork, patience, and vision as he carried the ball into the end zone and reminded fans of the Abdullah they drafted years ago.

Ameer Abdullah may be able to provide additional value to the Lions in the forms of special teams. Against the Raiders, Abdullah lined up as the starting punt returner over Jamal Agnew. He has experience in the past and if can contribute consistently throughout the remainder of preseason he has a chance to take more snaps from Agnew while also giving the Lions more roster flexibility.
