No. 2: Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell
Eagles tight end Zach Ertz is undoubtedly one of the best players at his position in the NFL. He is one of the most difficult one-on-one matchups the league has to offer. On this night, though, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell bottled up the dynamic playmaker.
Ertz finished with five catches for 48 years, as well as multiple drops. A third-year pro from Minnesota, Campbell blanketed Ertz on many plays and played solid, disciplined coverage at every opportunity. Credit is due to fellow linebacker Dion Jones for the coverage as well, but we’ll get to that later.
Campbell finished with six tackles on the night, but his most important contribution came in something that doesn’t go on the stat sheet.
By and large, the Falcons defense played well and did its job. The offense just couldn’t pull their own weight. Campbell played a pivotal role in limiting the Eagles to just 18 points and 232 total yards.
If he can continue his play this way, the Falcons may form one of the more formidable linebacking trios with the aforementioned Jones and Vic Beasley.
