The New York Jets were deemed by many people as the winners of the offseason. Owner Woody Johnson made his desires very clear; he wanted the front office to find a quarterback upgrade as he believed that was the only thing missing from his team becoming a contender.
General manager Joe Douglas accomplished that feat, acquiring Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers. With Rodgers in the fold, there are plenty of people who believe that the Jets are now Super Bowl contenders.
There are now expectations on the team entering the 2023 season. Outside of the quarterback position, this was a very solid group in 2022. The defense is amongst the best in the NFL and there are weapons galore around Rodgers.
Given all of the publicity and hype surrounding the Jets, former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky believes they now have a huge target on their backs. He spoke about it during a recent appearance on ESPN’s First Take.
“This is by far the most hunted team in the NFL,” Orlovsky said about the Jets.
Orlovsky made some interesting points in this debate as to why he feels that way about the Jets. The attention that they have received, from the roster moves made and appearing on Hard Knocks, is enough reason for opponents to have a little extra motivation to knock them off.
New York will have their work cut out for them early on. Their schedule is brutal as four out of their first six games are against playoff teams from last season. The two games against non-playoff teams are their AFC East rivals the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos, in what will be an emotionally charged game after comments made by Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton.
It will be an opportunity for the Jets to show that they are not pretenders heading into the 2023 season. If they can get through that stretch with a .500 record or better, teams around the league are going to start taking notice and the target on their backs will get even bigger.
