The New York Giants came up short on Christmas Day in their matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, losing 33-25. It was a tale of two halves for New York, who struggled mightily in the first half with Tommy DeVito leading the way.

The undrafted rookie free agent helped the team go on a three-game winning streak, but he has fallen on tough times in recent weeks against stronger competition. After losing 24-6 in Week 15 to the New Orleans Saints, DeVito and the Giants were down 20-3 at halftime against the Eagles.

In the locker room, head coach Brian Daboll opted to make a change. He opted to bench DeVito in favor of Tyrod Taylor, something the rookie was understanding of as he wasn’t performing. It looked to be the correct move as Taylor breathed some life into the team.

The Giants outscored the Eagles 15-0 in the third quarter to climb back into the game. While the comeback attempt ultimately fell short, Daboll saw enough to make the change permanent. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Giants are going to start Taylor in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Rams, moving DeVito to the bench.

The story of DeVito was a special one for a few weeks, but Daboll and the Giants are in the business of winning football games. Going forward, he believes that Taylor gives the team the best chance to do that and he will be taking over as the starter moving forward.

This is the second stint Taylor will have as the team’s starting quarterback. When Daniel Jones was injured originally in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins, it was Taylor who replaced him. He would start three games before getting injured himself in Week 8 against the New York Jets, which thrust DeVito into his first action.

Taylor was placed on injured reserve with a rib injury but was activated and ready to go a few weeks ago and he will now get the chance to start once again. On the season, Taylor has completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 725 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

He has added 119 yards on 24 carries, providing the offense with efficient, dual-threat playmaking. Taylor has been, by some stats, the most productive Giants’ quarterback this season and will have a chance to audition for other jobs around the league as he is set to hit free agency this offseason.
