Giants’ Brian Daboll Gets Brutally Honest About Tommy DeVito

New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito continues proving all of his doubters wrong. On Monday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers, he kept the good times rolling with his first career fourth-quarter comeback and second game-winning drive.

With 1:33 remaining in the game, DeVito and the Giants offense got the ball back following a Jordan Love touchdown to Malik Heath. Not phased by the moment, he drove the team right down the field, putting them in position for Randy Bullock to knock through a 37-yard, game-winning field goal.

On the final drive of the game, DeVito was perfect, completing each of his four passes for 53 yards on the 57-yard drive. It was a gutsy performance by the undrafted rookie, who performed well enough in his previous starts to hold off veteran Tyrod Taylor, who is healthy enough to play now after suffering an injury in Week 8 against the New York Jets.

“You enjoy it when it’s an outcome like this, right?” DeVito said. “I mean, I enjoy being on the field any play, no matter what play it is. So just try to enjoy it.”

With the win over the Packers, the Giants kept their slim playoff hopes alive, moving to 5-8. DeVito is 3-1 as a starter, with his only loss being Week 11 on the road against the Dallas Cowboys in his first career start.

While DeVito is the talk of the town, he isn’t letting that distract him. He has remained calm, cool and collected despite trending on a seemingly nightly basis and seeing his family get as much air time as Taylor Swift at this point.

“I think as a quarterback you have to stay even keel through it all. You know, because when you are winning like we are right now, everything is high, and when you are losing, everything is low,” DeVito said. “So as a quarterback, you have to be able to stay even through it all. So, I take pride in that. It’s something that I’ve grown over, obviously over time, from when I was playing from when I was 5. Throughout high school and college, just continuing to grow that part of my game.”

While there was some discussion about whether or not the team would change quarterbacks during their bye, that has been put to rest. DeVito will be out there in Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints.

He has earned the job with his performance over the last few weeks, even earning some praise from the Giants’ head coach, Brian Daboll. “Earned the right to play [Monday], and earned the right to play next week,” Daboll said. “The kid’s done a good job.”

Overall, DeVito was 17-of-21 against the Packers for 158 yards and a touchdown. He added 71 yards on the ground, making NFL history with his Monday Night Football performance.

What else does DeVito have up his sleeves? The Giants are certainly hoping for another win, as a victory over the Saints would have the team starting to smell a playoff berth ahead of a massive matchup against their NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, in Week 16.
