The last week was an emotional one for the New York Giants. A regular-season finale is the last time we will see some players suiting up for the team. It is something that occurs every season, but it hits a little harder when it is long-time contributors that could be departing.

That was the case in Week 18 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants crushed their NFC East rivals 27-10, potentially sending two fan favorites off on a high note. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard spoke about that being the last time he would likely be in the locker room for the team, as he looks to be leaning toward retirement.

While running back Saquon Barkley isn’t retiring, that could have very well been his last game with the Giants as well. Barkley is set to hit free agency after playing out this season on an amended one-year contract following unfruitful long-term negotiations last offseason.

NFL News & Rumors: Saquon Barkley & New York Giants Updates

After signing quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract ahead of the franchise tag deadline, New York opted to use the tag on Barkley. Discussions were had for weeks but a long-term deal was unable to be agreed upon ahead of the deadline.

As a result, Barkley had to play out the season on the franchise tag, the two sides would have to work out an amended one-year deal or he would hold out. Barkley opted for an amended one-year deal with some incentives for him to earn more.

The two sides could be heading toward a similar situation this offseason. Barkley is set to hit free agency again and the franchise tag is an option. However, Giants’ beat writer Ralph Vacchiano doesn’t believe the tag will be used on Barkley. In fact, he doesn’t believe Barkley will be back at all in 2024.

Given how negotiations played out last season, it certainly didn’t seem like a long-term relationship was in the works. The running back position has been devalued around the league and the Giants weren’t going to shell out big money to retain Barkley when the market didn’t require it.

NFL News & Rumors: Saquon Barkley & New York Giants Updates

While money is the big sticking point, the Giants should do everything in their power to bring Bakley back. He is too important to their game plan on offense and is a pillar in their locker room, someone who is respected and looked at as a leader for the team.

Production on the field can be replaced, but replacing those intangibles will be virtually impossible. Even if the franchise tag isn’t used, the Giants need to figure out a way to bring back their star running back.
