This week has been a big one for the New York Giants. After some uncertainty surrounded the franchise heading into the future, they got to work ensuring that everyone would be present and participating at training camp this year.

First, it was running back Saquon Barkley, who shockingly agreed to a one-year deal after long-term talks didn’t reach the finish line before the July 17th deadline. Now, the Giants have secured one of their franchise cornerstones for the long term.

Star left tackle Andrew Thomas and the team agreed to a monster extension on Wednesday morning, right before the team was set to take the field for the first practice of training camp. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the two sides agreed to a five-year, $117.5 million extension that includes $67 million guaranteed.

That is a record-setting deal for an offensive lineman and one that Thomas has earned with his performance on the field. After a shaky first season in the NFL, he has cemented himself as one of the premier left tackles in the NFL.

Still only 24 years old, the Giants have now locked the Georgia product into a long-term deal through his prime years. He is now under contract through 2029, as he still had one season left on his rookie deal and a fifth-year option the Giants already exercised earlier this offseason.

Thomas is the fifth offensive lineman to secure at least $60 million guaranteed on a deal, joining Ronnie Staley, Ryan Ramczyk, Laremy Tunsil and Jawaan Taylor. He is also the third Giants draft pick to sign a long-term deal, joining Dexter Lawrence and Daniel Jones.

For years the offensive line had been an issue for the Giants as they didn’t commit many assets to the position. But, that began to change with the selection of Thomas, who has blossomed into a star. They can only hope the same thing happens for 2022 first-round pick Evan Neal, who like Thomas, struggled as a rookie but has the talent and tools to become an excellent player as well.
