Giants’ Tyrod Taylor Doesn’t Hold Back On Rookie Wide Receiver

The New York Giants have begun showing some signs of life in the last two weeks. While there is plenty of work remaining for them to reach the heights they did last season, the product on the field has at least improved.

Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor is 1-1 as the starter in place of Daniel Jones, who is dealing with a neck injury. He has operated this offense better than Jones has outside of the second half against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2. A big reason for that is Taylor’s willingness to take shots downfield.

One of the players who has seen his involvement in the offense increase in the last few games is rookie wide receiver, Jalin Hyatt. Coming out of Tennessee, the third-round pick had one elite skill that he could rely on; his speed.

He would routinely run past opposing secondaries with the Volunteers and the Giants are working that into their offense more and more. Against the Washington Commanders last week, Hyatt caught two passes for 75 yards, including this 42-yard reception to keep a drive going in the fourth quarter.

Throwing the deep ball opens up the rest of the offense. Tight end Darren Waller has more closely resembled the kind of player New York thought they were getting with big plays over the middle of the field, using his athleticism to beat defenses.

In addition to Hyatt working down the field, Taylor has also been targeting Darius Slayton for chunk plays. But it was Hyatt who he spoke about glowingly after the game, commenting on how much speed he brings to the table.

That speed Hyatt provides this offense is exactly what general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were looking for this offseason. They wanted to make this unit more explosive and that is exactly what the Tennessee product has done.
