Even before the 2023 regular season began the Jacksonville Jaguars knew they would have some obstacles to overcome with their offensive line. Suspensions and injuries played a big part, as the Jaguars entered last week’s action with the No. 17 ranked offensive line in the NFL.

Knowing an upgrade was needed if they wanted to make a run in the postseason, the Jaguars went out and acquired one ahead of the NFL Trade Deadline. They landed versatile offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a sixth-round pick. In a corresponding move to fit Cleveland on the roster, offensive guard Ben Bartch has been released.

Cleveland became expendable for the Vikings after signing veteran Dalton Risner and inserting him into the lineup. But, it is hard to not feel as if the Jaguars came away with a steal here despite Cleveland being in the final year of his contract.

He is a great addition for Jacksonville given the experience he has playing all over the offensive line. As a rookie, Cleveland took all of his snaps at right guard before shifting over to left guard, where has resided for three seasons. In college at Boise State, he played tackle.

That provides Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson with a versatile player to use off the bench in case of emergency. He can be the swing guard or tackle depending on what is needed or take over as the starting left guard for Tyler Shatley, who has struggled thus far this season.

In the midst of a career-best pass-blocking season, Cleveland is a steal for the Jaguars. He is a solid run-blocker, registering a grade of at least 67.5 in each of his four seasons in the NFL. For only a sixth-round pick, he is a worthwhile addition for a Jacksonville team looking like a legitimate Super Bowl contender in the AFC.
