Justin Fields may have played his final game as a member of the Chicago Bears on Sunday, and if that ends up being the case, Fields is just fine with it.
Speaking on his future after the season finale, Fields seemed rather apathetic.
‘‘I gave it my all,’’ Fields said, via Jason Lieser of The Chicago Sun-Times. ‘‘Whether here or not, I have no regrets.’’
The 24-year-old went 11-for-16 with 148 yards while carrying the ball eight times for 27 yards in what was a rather anemic offensive performance for the Bears in a 17-9 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
It was one of Fields’ less eventful outings of the second half, as the Ohio State product had put forth some showings that left some wondering if he may, in fact, be just what Chicago is looking for under center for the long haul.
However, with the Bears owning the No. 1 overall pick in this coming spring’s NFL Draft thanks to last year’s trade with the Carolina Panthers, it’s looking less and less likely that Fields will be taking snaps in the Windy City next season.
‘‘I’m headed up,’’ Fields said. ‘‘I felt growth this year each and every game. I’ve been feeling it, really, since I got back from injury. I’ve gotten better tremendously.”
Fields made 13 starts this season, throwing for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 61.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 86.3. In addition, he rushed for 657 yards and four scores.
The Kennesaw, Ga. native missed four games in the middle of the year due to a dislocated thumb he suffered in Week 6, just when it looked like the youngster was about to break out.
Should the Bears decide to move Justin Fields this offseason, he should generate plenty of trade interest from quarterback-needy teams around the league.
Chicago went 7-10 this season, which is a respectable record when you take into consideration that the Bears began the year 0-4.
