Kansas City Chiefs Could Emerge As Zach Wilson Trade Suitor

As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for their fourth Super Bowl in five years, all you can do is marvel at the accomplishments of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. What he has done in only six years as the team’s starter is more than most quarterbacks accomplish in their entire careers.

He is a two-time MVP, two-time Super Bowl winner and MVP, six-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro First Team member and also has an All-Pro Second Team nomination on his resume. If he retired following Super Bowl 58 against the San Francisco 49ers, he would be a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame.

Of course, retirement isn’t close for Mahomes, who just entered his prime at 28 years old in September. Opponents are going to be dealing with him for a long time, as he has plenty of excellent seasons ahead of him.

While the Chiefs aren’t planning on losing him any time soon, part of the job of the front office is to prepare for any outcome. Should Mahomes ever need to miss time, Kansas City needs to make sure they have a quarterback behind him who can keep the team afloat.

That is why, normally under Andy Reid, they have had a veteran behind Mahomes. But, could that change this offseason? Heavy on Jets reporter Paul Edsen Jr. believes the Chiefs could be a landing spot for Zach Wilson during the 2024 NFL offseason.

“I think, ideally, if [Wilson] could go somewhere with a veteran, established guy, and sit and learn — and it’s a legitimate offense that he can learn and a legitimate offensive coach and scheme — I think there will be a few landing spots, I really do,”

“There [are] enough veteran quarterbacks in backup positions that are up in the air going forward that [Wilson] might make some sense [to replace],” the ex-NFL executive added, noting that the Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams and Seahawks stand out as a few teams that he could see targeting the former BYU product.

“I think the Chiefs might make some sense,” Mueller reiterated later, concluding that there are “always” opportunities for backup quarterback jobs around the NFL every offseason.

Landing in Kansas City would afford Wilson the chance to not only develop his skill set, something he wasn’t afforded with the New York Jets, but learn from two of the very best. There is a stark difference in being developed by Robert Saleh compared to Reid.

Wilson was also thrust into the starting spot right away, facing zero competition in his first two seasons in the NFL. That was likely a detriment to him, as making the jump from BYU to the NFL is a huge one when it comes to the difference in talent.

With the Chiefs, he could sit behind Mahomes, taking in everything similarly to what the Jets had planned for him to do behind Aaron Rodgers. But, when Rodgers was injured in Week 1, Wilson was back in the starting role and struggling just as he did in his first two seasons.
