Marquise Brown signed with the Kansas City Chiefs this week, but the memories of his time with the Baltimore Ravens still remain.
Brown was originally selected by the Ravens with the 25th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft and spent the first three seasons of his career there, enjoying moderate success.
As a matter of fact, Brown posted a 1,000-yard campaign during his final season with Baltimore in 2021, but that ensuing offseason, the wide receiver asked for a trade due to dissatisfaction with his role in the Ravens’ run-heavy offense.
Baltimore obliged and sent him to the Arizona Cardinals, but it didn’t exactly help Brown’s career. It actually inhibited him, as his numbers took a nose dive. This past year, he caught just 51 passes for 574 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games.
Still, the 26-year-old does not regret requesting to be dealt two years ago.
“Yeah, I feel like that was the best decision for me,” Brown said, via the Chiefs’ official YouTube account. “At the end of the day, if you’re not happy with yourself or you’re not happy with what’s going on, you can’t put your best foot forward on the field. So, I feel like my time in Arizona, I mean, I didn’t accomplish stuff I wanted to accomplish on the field. But as a man, I grew — I grew closer with God, I grew closer in my relationship with my family. And I feel like God put me in that situation because I needed it.”
It’s important to note that Brown dealt with injuries in Arizona, as he played in a grand total of 26 games in two seasons with the club. Plus, due to Kyler Murray’s ACL tear during the second half of 2021, Brown was never able to benefit from consistent quarterback play.
But now, Brown will be catching passes from Patrick Mahomes. That’s a pretty cushy job and one heck of an upgrade from Josh Dobbs.
The Chiefs were clearly in need of another weapon on offense, and Brown should be able to slide in as the club’s No. 2 receiver behind Rashee Rice.
And who knows? Maybe Marquise Brown will see his former Ravens club in the playoffs next winter.
