There was a time when Hunter Renfrow was a critical piece in the Las Vegas Raiders‘ offense. Now, the Raiders are looking to dump him.
According to Vincent Bonsignore of The Las Vegas Review-Journal, Las Vegas will try and trade Renfrow this offseason. If it is unable to find a trade partner for him, it will outright release him.
Now, Bonsignore qualifies his statement by saying that there is a chance the wide receiver sticks around if he renegotiates his contract (he is currently due $11.2 million in 2024), but if not, the Raiders will almost surely say goodbye to Renfrow.
Renfrow, who played his collegiate football at Clemson, was selected by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
He played in 13 games during his rookie campaign and was solid, catching 49 passes for 605 yards and four touchdowns. He posted very similar numbers the following year, snaring 56 balls for 656 yards and a couple of scores.
Then, in 2021, Renfrow broke out, hauling in 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.
It looked like Renfrow was able to develop into one of the more prolific pass-catchers in the league, but then, in 2022, injuries limited him to just 10 games as he registered 36 catches for 330 yards while reaching the end zone twice.
This past season, the 28-year-old logged 25 catches for 255 yards, seeing his role shrink even more.
Clearly, there isn’t much of a place for Renfrow in Las Vegas’ offense anymore, but perhaps another team can still make use of him.
That being said, it’s hard to imagine that the Raiders can extract much—if any—value for Renfrow out of a trade at this point, especially given his salary.
