3. Finish Among The Top 16 Teams In Rushing
For a while, the running joke was how many games Detroit went without a 100-yard rushing performance. Kerryon Johnson restored some semblance of order to the backfield in 2018, but injuries resulted in a sophomore slump.
The Lions have one of the NFL’s strongest quarterbacks in Stafford, but the offense lacks versatility. Stafford threw for 312.4 yards per game during his eight appearances last season. Meanwhile, the Lions only rushed for 103.1 yards per game. That ranked 21st in the NFL, which isn’t horrible, but it’s not the sign of a playoff team either.
Ten of the top-16 teams in rushing yards made the playoffs last year. It’s not a guaranteed pathway to the postseason, but having a strong rushing attack significantly improves winning percentages. A relevant ground game could also take some stress off Stafford as he returns from an injury-shortened season.
The Lions hope that Johnson, Bo Scarbrough, and D’Andre Swift can uplift the team’s woeful backfield in 2020.
