Vikings’ Kirk Cousins On Pace For Historical Season So Far

Kirk Cousins, Vikings

Considering all of the trade speculation surrounding Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, you would think the veteran was having a poor season.

But that is hardly the case.

Cousins is on pace to throw for over 6,000 yards and 51 touchdowns this season (h/t JPAFootball), which would be the greatest single-season effort in NFL history.

The crazy part is that Cousins is also on pace for zero wins, as the Vikings have gotten off to an 0-3 start, which is what has summoned the Cousins trade chatter to begin with.

To be fair, none of the rumors have been substantiated. It is all fan and media conjecture at this point, as many are theorizing that Minnesota could choose to blow it up ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline. Cousins’ contract expires at the end of the year, and with the signal-caller being 35 years old, many have wondered if the Vikings want to just begin a complete rebuild, which would begin with dealing Cousins.

Cousins currently leads the NFL in completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns, so if Minnesota does choose to move him, it would surely require a significant return. However, whether or not rival teams would be willing to pay that price is debatable given that he is an aging quarterback who will have a chance to walk via free agency come springtime.

The Vikings initially signed Kirk Cousins back in 2018, hoping that he would be the final piece needed to put the team over the top. Instead, Minnesota has failed to make it past the Divisional Round of the playoffs since Cousins arrived. Ironically enough, the Vikings made it to the NFC Championship Game under the direction of Case Keenum in the season prior to Cousins signing with the squad.

Minnesota will aim to pick up its first win when it faces the Carolina Panthers in a battle of winless teams this Sunday.
