Patriots Named Potential Destination For Former Pro Bowl QB

The New England Patriots have a tough situation to figure out under center this offseason, as Mac Jones does not appear to be the answer at quarterback.

But how will the Patriots solve their problem?

Well, Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports thinks that veteran signal-caller Ryan Tannehill would be one way to go.

Tannehill is set to hit free agency in the coming weeks, and while he is certainly not the same quarterback from several years ago, he could still represent a potential stopgap for New England.

Benjamin even went as far to call Tannehill “prime Jimmy Garoppolo,” referencing Garoppolo’s run to the Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers during the 2019-20 campaign.

Of course, that may have been a more apt comparison for Tannehill in four or five years ago rather than the current point in time.

Tannehill is coming off of a 2023 season in which he played in 10 games and made eight starts for the Tennessee Titans before being benched in favor of Will Levis. During his time on the field this past year, Tannehill thew for 1,616 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 64.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 78.5.

The 35-year-old has spent the last five seasons of his career with the Titans, and back in 2019, he made the Pro Bowl after totaling 2,742 yards, 22 touchdowns and six picks while completing 70.3 percent of his throws and registering a league-high passer rating of 117.5 in 12 appearances and 10 starts.

Then, in 2020, Tannehill enjoyed what was probably the best season of his career, recording 3,819 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions, completing 65.5 percent of his passes and tallying a 106.5 passer rating.

Since then, the Texas A&M product has steadily declined, and at this stage of his career, he is probably nothing more than a capable backup.

But, if the Pats can’t find any other solutions at quarterback, turning to Tannehill may be an avenue worth exploring.
