Despite what most say, preseason absolutely matters. For fans, the opener tends to be the most watched and anticipated game out of all four weeks. For NFL coaching staffs and front offices, weeks two and three are the true tests for those fighting for roster spots.
During these games, backup players experience a tick up in playing time, and, hopefully, vein to find their rhythm on the field in hopes of making a splash on the roster.
For the New Orleans Saints, Friday is the perfect time for a second preseason game. With multiple position groups yet to be fully addressed on the depth chart, another tune up game will suit the coaches and players very well. This time around, it will be at home against the Arizona Cardinals. The Saints will get to see Josh Rosen, this last draft’s tenth overall selection out of UCLA, up close and personal in just his second NFL game. Future Hall of Fame inductee Larry Fitzgerald will most likely get some reps, as many eyes will be on those two.
Focusing on the Saints, there is plenty to watch deep into the game. The second-string linebacker corps and offensive line are not set in stone, and there’s plenty to see out of the rookies, per usual. Three players, to me, standout amongst the rest when it comes to “who to keep an eye on” this Friday. The performance from these guys will not only determine the outcome of the game, but also the eventual outcome of the roster. Two very important instances for New Orleans.
