Giants’ Extension With Daniel Jones In Danger Of Being Franchise Killer

Daniel Jones and the New York Giants suffered another bad loss at home and now it seems like they have a problem on their hands at the quarterback position.

After a shockingly good 2022 season, expectations were high for the Giants coming into 2023. The Giants not only made the playoffs last season, but they even won a game against the Minnesota Vikings on the road.

With that victory came a lot of hope for the Giants, who were going through a rebuild, but now appeared to be on the other side of it with a playoff win. Much of the reason for the success of the Giants last season was the change in coaching and the improved play of quarterback Daniel Jones.

Last season, Jones totaled 3,205 passing yards, 15 touchdown passes, five interceptions, and completed 67.2 percent of his passes. It was Jones’ best season as a passer, resulting in Jones getting a big new contract.

This offseason was tricky for the Giants to navigate with Saquon Barkley and Jones needing to be paid. The Giants decided to pay Jones long-term over Barkley, and that decision might not be looking like the right one as of now.

Jones signed a 4-year, $160 million contract in the offseason, which was a lot of money for a quarterback that to be fair, hasn’t done all that much. The Giants likely thought he would continue improving when they signed him to it, but that hasn’t been the case so far this season.

So far this season, Jones has totaled 765 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and six interceptions. For a player being paid as much as Jones is, he quite simply has to be better for the Giants.

As of now, the Giants are sitting at 1-3 with two very difficult games coming up. In the next two weeks, the Giants will be playing on the road against the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills. From what we’ve seen so far from both of those teams and the Giants this season, it’s hard to imagine that they can compete.

With the team staring at a 1-5 record, rumblings will start to continue about Jones if he continues to struggle. For the Giants, they do have a possible out in his contract in 2025, but that is a while away and could hurt the franchise if he can’t turn it around.

Brian Daboll was praised for Daniel Jones’ turnaround last season when he got him playing some good football for the team. Now, he will need to find some of that magic again to try and save the season.
