Jets’ Allen Lazard Has Wild Zach Wilson, Aaron Rodgers Comparison

New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard likened quarterback Zach Wilson to Aaron Rodgers following the Jets’ sloppy overtime Week 8 win over the New York Giants.

Before you get too incensed, Lazard—who played with Rodgers in Green Bay before linking back up with him in New York this season—was merely referring to Wilson’s poise on the Jets’ game-tying drive at the end of regulation.

After Giants’ kicker Graham Gano missed a field goal with 24 seconds remaining, Wilson took the Jets down the field and made back-to-back 29-yard completions to Garrett Wilson and Lazard in the process. That ultimately set up Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein for the game-tying field goal.

“I think Zach showed a glimmer of Aaron Rodgers in what he was able to do in those last 24 seconds,” Allen Lazard said, via Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post. “He just gave us a chance, and that’s all we can ask for.”

Of course, one can argue that Rodgers would not have put the Jets in that position to begin with.

Gang Green should have easily dispatched Big Blue on Sunday, as the Giants finished with negative eight net passing yards for the game. No; that is not a misprint.

Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones was already out with a neck issue, and backup Tyrod Taylor was knocked out early due to a rib injury he sustained during the game. That left things up to third-string signal-caller Tommy DeVito, who obviously was not up to the challenge.

The fact that the Jets—who had won two straight going into the Giants matchup—needed a crazy drive in the final seconds just to force overtime is not exactly impressive, so it’s hard to actually feel good about that win if you’re Wilson and Co.

Wilson went 17-for-36 with 240 yards and a touchdown on the afternoon.

Regardless, Zach Wilson somehow managed to get the job done, and now the Jets are 4-3 heading into their Week 9 clash with the Los Angeles Chargers next Monday.
