Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur could be on the hot seat after the Packers lost their fourth straight game this past weekend.

Bill Simmons spoke with Cousin Sal on the Bill Simmons Podcast earlier this week, and both agreed that LaFleur could end up getting fired this season.

“Green Bay is going the wrong direction, and I actually think LaFleur is in first-coach-fired territory now,” Simmons said.

Obviously, this was before the Las Vegas Raiders canned Josh McDaniels, so LaFleur can no longer be the first coach fired. But he can certainly be No. 2.

“Yeah, I think he’s one of like three or four coaches right in there,” Cousin Sal responded.

Simmons added that LaFleur has actually seemed perplexed this year, which is definitely never a good sign for a head coach.

“He might lead the league right now for there’s a flag, a positive play has been called back on offense or defense, followed by the shot of the confused coach on the sidelines. I think he’s our league leader this year — Matt LaFleur,” Simmons said. “Just kind of like, ‘Aww man, that woulda been a really good play. I can’t believe we got another penalty.’”

But would the Packers pull the plug on LaFleur midseason like this?

In defense of LaFleur, Green Bay was not expected to be a contender going into 2023. This was supposed to be a transition year after Aaron Rodgers’ departure, and growing pains were expected with Jordan Love under center.

However, expectations may have risen too high when the Packers got off to a 2-1 and appeared to be playoff contenders in the early going.

Realistically speaking, Green Bay does not seem to be a very good football team, and that probably has more to do with the lack of elite talent on the roster than anything else.

That doesn’t necessarily excuse poor coaching from Matt LaFleur, but the fact that he hasn’t had much to work with this season may absolutely play a role in any decisions made by the front office.

The Packers will battle the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday.
