The 2023 season did not go as planned for the Philadelphia Eagles. After getting off to a hot start, going 10-1 to start the campaign, the wheels quickly fell off. Philadelphia ended the season losing five out of six games in the regular season and then getting eliminated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Super Wild Card Weekend.

The Eagles ended up being one of the most disappointing teams in the league, falling woefully short of the expectations they had coming into the season. That has led to some major changes already occurring this offseason.

Philadelphia has revamped its coaching staff around head coach Nick Sirianni. He is certainly on the hot seat after firing his offensive and defensive coordinators. That means 2024 will be the third straight season he has someone different in each of those spots.

With the coaching staff situated, the Eagles should look to be aggressive in upgrading their roster. Several areas on the team could use an infusion of talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball where the team was hit hard last offseason by defections.

One of the positions of need heading into the offseason is the secondary. In 2022 the Eagles had arguably the best secondary in the NFL with Darius Slay, James Bradberry and C.J. Gardner-Johnson. In 2023, that was no longer the case.

Gardner-Johnson left in free agency, signing with the Detroit Lions. Slay was nearly a cap casualty but the two sides were able to work out a compromise to retain him. Bradberry re-signed as well but their production fell off from the previous season.

That is why Matt Bowen of ESPN believes the Eagles should make a big move in free agency, signing L’Jarius Sneed. Sneed is coming off back-to-back Super Bowl victories with the Kansas City Chiefs and would be a massive upgrade for their secondary.

“Upgrading the cornerback position is an offseason priority in Philadelphia. With Sneed, the Eagles land one of the top veteran free agents, who has the coverage skills and ability to produce in Vic Fangio’s system,” wrote Bowen.

Sneed, a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Louisiana Tech, has turned himself into one of the better cornerbacks in the league. His regular season production took a step back in 2023 compared to 2022, but he has graded out consistently at PFF in his four seasons.

With Slay and Bradberry taking a step back in 2023 and both players now being on the wrong side of 30, adding someone like Sneed makes a lot of sense. He brings some youth to the cornerback position and someone the Eagles can build their secondary around for years to come.
