Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons

Matt Ryan has experienced a roller coaster career since he was drafted 3rd overall in 2008. This includes an MVP season in 2016, a soul-crushing loss to Tom Brady in the Super Bowl that same year, playing alongside one of the most physically imposing receivers ever, and experiencing more losing seasons than he would like.

Last season the Falcons were 7-9 after a much more successful second half than first, but it’s clear that this is no longer a perennial playoff squad. Matty Ice graded out as the 15th best passer in the league, but you might expect more out of someone operating with Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, and then-Austin Hooper.

Since last season, Mohamed Sanu was sent to New England before the trade deadline, and Hooper recently signed a large contract with the Cleveland Browns. One reason for the lack of offensive output was the nonexistent running game with Devonta Freeman, who the team has now cut ties with.

His replacement is former Offensive Player of the Year and Georgia native Todd Gurley. His performance may not replicate that of the Rams juggernaut season in which he scored 19 touchdowns and totaled more than 2000 scrimmage yards, but he is still a massive upgrade despite knee issues.

Now that Matt Ryan is 35 years old and coming off a 26 touchdown, 14 interception year, his best years appear to be behind him. Julio Jones is still an elite route runner and goal line presence, and recent trade acquisition Hayden Hurst is a former first round tight end ready to breakout in a leading role.

The Falcons remain in a precarious position due to the strength of their division, but a return to the Matty Ice of 2016 is not completely out of the question.

Prediction: 4,200 yards, 27 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 65% accuracy, 1 rushing touchdown.
