NFL Insider Hints That Raiders’ Jimmy Garoppolo Could Retire

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be released after he was recently suspended for two games due to taking a banned substance, which has put his NFL future in question.

Garoppolo’s days as a starting signal-caller in the league are probably over, especially after how poorly he played with the Raiders this past season.

Plus, Garoppolo is getting older, and he has only played one full season in his NFL career.

As a result, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wonders if Garoppolo may end up calling it quits.

“That leaves maybe a bridge-quarterback situation or coming in like Jay Cutler or Joe Flacco did, as a quick-fix starter in an emergency, as the paths for Garoppolo back into playing in 2024,” Breer wrote. “And after he seemed content to play out the string in the shadows last year, some wonder if he’ll really want to do that or if, after 10 years in the NFL, he’s good with what he’s accomplished.”

Garoppolo played in seven games and made six starts in 2023, throwing for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 65.1 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 77.7.

That came after the 32-year-old signed a three-year, $72.5 million deal with Las Vegas last March.

Clearly, Garoppolo did not work out and was ultimately supplanted by rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell as the starter midway through the season.

Now, Garoppolo finds himself in a rather precarious situation. He could always take a backup job somewhere, but based on his injury history (which includes concussions), you have to wonder if he would actually want to do that.

Jimmy Garoppolo was originally selected by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft and spent his first three seasons backing up Tom Brady. He was then traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, where he spent six years. His run with the 49ers was highlighted by a Super Bowl appearance in February 2020.
