The Atlanta Falcons don’t exactly have stability at the quarterback position, as they have gone from Desmond Ridder to Taylor Heinicke under center this season.
Neither of those two guys is going to turn any heads.
However, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated actually likes the way the Falcons are handling the situation and appreciates the fact that they have not gone all in on anyone just yet.
Now obviously, in an ideal world, Atlanta would already have its franchise quarterback and wouldn’t have to think about the position all that much, but Breer adds that the Falcons have at least put enough surrounding pieces in place.
Breer mentions that Atlanta has talented young running back Bijan Robinson in the backfield, plus a couple of impressive targets in wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts. He also notes that the Falcons have a solid offensive line and a decent defensive core, so really, all they are missing is the right signal-caller to lead the team.
The bad news for Atlanta is that it won’t be bad enough to finish with a high enough draft pick to take one of the top quarterbacks like Caleb Williams or Drake Maye in the NFL Draft this offseason. However, the Falcons can always trade up to take a signal-caller or potentially swing a deal for a quarterback who is already established in the pros.
Atlanta is in Year 3 with head coach Arthur Smith and general manager Terry Fontenot, so owner Arthur Blank probably does want to start seeing some positive results sometime soon. The Falcons went just 7-10 in each of their first two seasons with Smith and Fontenot at the helm, and while the team appears to be better this year, Atlanta is still just 4-5.
At some point, the Falcons are going to have to push their chips into the middle of the table for a quarterback. Whether that means moving up in the draft, signing a free agent or making a trade remains to be seen, but Atlanta is going to need to get this situation figured out relatively soon.
The Falcons will head on the road to take on the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday. They are aiming to snap a two-game losing streak.
