Former NFL star TJ Houshmandzadeh believes Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was already dealing with an injury in his right leg before suffering a right calf strain on July 27.

Houshmandzadeh noticed that Burrow was wearing a sleeve on his right calf when he got hurt.

Burrow will be sidelined for “several weeks” after suffering his right calf strain. The LSU product was carted off the field after scrambling to his right and pulling up with a non-contact injury.

The Bengals will take on the Cleveland Browns to open the 2023 campaign. Burrow, as expected, will miss the entire preseason.

“Joe got more days this July than he’s ever had in the NFL,” Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said. “So I feel really good about that and the progress we’ve made during those July practices with Joe. And when he’s able to get back, we’ll be able to get the work that we need.”

One of the best players in the NFL, Burrow threw for 4,475 yards last season. He tossed 35 touchdowns and completed 68.3% of his passes. The Bengals went 12-4 under Burrow and beat the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills in the NFL playoffs before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game on the road.

Burrow is eligible to sign a contract extension with the Bengals. July 26’s agreement between the Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert on a five-year, $262.5 million extension officially set the target for Burrow’s representation in their talks with the Bengals.

“It gets done when it gets done,” Burrow said when asked for an estimation of when he might sign a long-term extension (he was asked the question a day before he got hurt). “We’ll see.”
