New Orleans Saints: Jameis Winston

The Jameis Winston situation in New Orleans is extremely interesting. After a 30/30 season with the Buccaneers, Winston signed a one-year deal worth $1.1 million with the Saints for 2020. Did the Saints sign Winston to trade him? Most likely not, but there are possibilities.

Winston is being viewed as the backup to Drew Brees, who recently signed a two-year, $50 million contract extension. Winston is the new Teddy Bridgewater because he is listed as the backup in the short term.

Winston is not the answer for New Orleans once Brees retires and the Saints made that clear with their contract offer. The franchise has shown that they like the skill set of Taysom Hill and believe he can be the heir to Brees.

Winston is nothing more than an insurance policy for the Saints. If Brees is forced to miss time, the Saints have a five-year starter on their bench with a familiarity of the NFC South to insert for a couple of weeks.

On the other hand, if a team views Winston as a starter, the Saints could try and make a deal to get some return for their backup quarterback. Either way, Winston is always a storyline and a player that will have eyes on him whether he is on the field or the bench.
