Trade Package: Detroit Lions trade a second-round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers for Casey Hayward.

The Los Angeles Chargers have a ton of players to resign this offseason. After giving Joey Bosa a major contract it would not surprise me if they trade some veterans for cap space. After trading away Darrius Slay, the Lions need some support in the secondary.

While the Chargers may not want to trade a star corner like Casey Hayward, there is a good chance the Lions have a high second-round pick. It would be very smart if they pull the trigger on this trade.

While Hayward may be a bit older, it is always important to have a veteran presence on defense. He would be a very strong mentor to Jeffrey Okudah. Although he is 30-years-old, Hayward is still one of the league’s best corners.

He is very good in both man and zone coverage and could help this young Lions defense grow. Detroit may want to trade for a veteran instead of drafting a rookie, especially after a college season where there are so many unknown variables.

The Chargers just signed a Pro-Bowl corner in Chris Harris. Desmond King is a very solid option at corner. The Chargers are going to need to free up cap space for Keenan Allen, Desmond King, and eventually Derwin James. Melvin Ingram also is due for a contract extension.

Trading Hayward for a high second-round pick would be a wise thing to do–adding more youth to a team already on the rise. Meanwhile, the Lions can build towards being more competitive in the NFC North.
