Jameis Winston, New Orleans Saints
Lastly, the No. 1 backup quarterback in the NFL is the fellow draft mate of Mariota — Jameis Winston. Just a pick before Mariota went to the Titans, Winston was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. After failing to garner much interest, Winston decided to sign a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints this offseason — giving him an ideal chance to position himself for free agency in 2021.
Coming into the NFL, Winston was faced with a ton of expectations as he entered his rookie season with the Buccaneers. The former Seminole would respond by throwing for 4,042 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions in his first season in the league.
Despite showing growth in certain areas of his game, Winston continued to exude concerns with his decision making, throwing 58 interceptions in his first four seasons. This past season, in his lone year under Bruce Arians, Winston threw for a career-high 5,109 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions.
While he is the first quarterback to throw for 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season, he still possesses a ton of potential in the NFL. At only 26 years old and room for improvement, Winston is undoubtedly the best backup quarterback in 2020.
