The Philadelphia Eagles signed wide receiver Julio Jones to a one-year deal earlier this week, and on Friday, head coach Nick Sirianni explained what the early expectations for the NFL star will be.
“Julio, you’re going to be tempted to want to put him in because he’s a phenomenal player that’s done a lot in this league,” Sirianni said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “We are going to have to make sure that we’re not putting him in danger. Doing what we need do to help us win the game and doing what he needs to do to help us win the game, and also being smart with his rep count just because of elevated risk of injury if you put him in for too much.”
While Jones has practiced with the Eagles this week, he has not seen live game action since last season while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 10 games in 2022, Jones logged 24 catches for 299 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Jones hit free agency back in the spring, but went unsigned.
NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Julio Jones, Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins Updates
Of course, this is not exactly the same Julio Jones from years past. There was a time when Jones was one of the NFL’s best wide receivers during his time with the Atlanta Falcons. He was drafted by the Falcons in 2011 and went on to make seven Pro Bowls with the club, earning a pair of First-Team All-Pro selections in the process.
Jones led the league in receiving yards twice in Atlanta, topping out at 1,871 yards in 2015. He also paced the NFL with 136 receptions that season.
The 34-year-old spent the first decade of his career with the Falcons before being traded to the Tennessee Titans in June 2021. Jones was a big disappointment in Tennessee, finishing with 31 catches for 434 yards and a touchdown in his lone campaign with the club.
