Will Passing on Receivers Come Back to Bite Them?
Many were anticipating the Packers to use the 2020 NFL draft to add a wide receiver. When Green Bay was on the clock, a lot of talented receivers were still left on the board. The Packers trading up ahead of the Ravens, Titans, and Seahawks made this possibility all the more intriguing.
Instead, the Packers drafted Aaron Rodgers’ future replacement in Jordan Love with the No. 26 overall pick. This was a move that shocked the NFL world, especially when factoring up they moved up in order to make it happen.
There were plenty of receivers still left on the board between prospects like Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman, and Laviska Shenault Jr., all of whom fell to the second round. Managing to add one of those prospects to pair with Davante Adams would have made for quite an intriguing receiver duo.
Even receiving backs like Antonio Gibson on the board for the Packers’ 2nd round pick, the Packers went with the bruising back in AJ Dillon out of Boston College. The direction the Packers are going is clearly very run-heavy.
There is a chance the Packers’ offense becomes too one dimensional. They have a superstar wideout but he does not have much of a No. 2 that can take the heat off. The hope around Packers camp is one of the young guys currently on the roster shows improvement. It will be interesting to see how they do, especially considering the Vikings’ corners are their weakest spot on defense.
