The Green Bay Packers find themselves in a unique position this postseason, boasting the youngest playoff team since the 1974 Buffalo Bills. While they focus on their own playoff journey, they could inadvertently influence the entire NFL landscape in their upcoming clash with the Dallas Cowboys.
Jerry Jones, the Cowboys’ owner, has cast a shadow of uncertainty over head coach Mike McCarthy as the playoffs loom. It’s no secret that the Cowboys are contemplating parting ways with McCarthy should their postseason run be short-lived. However, securing a new head coach swiftly may not be a straightforward task, as two highly sought-after candidates are fielding offers from multiple teams.
The Seattle Seahawks have expressed interest in recruiting Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Yet, the most significant free agent head coach on the market currently is Bill Belichick. This became apparent after the New England Patriots officially announced their separation from him, without pursuing a trade.
According to reports from Mike Florio of NBC Sports, Jerry Jones had conveyed his willingness to hire the legendary New England Patriots’ coach, Bill Belichick, as the head coach of the Cowboys many years ago. Belichick himself holds a deep admiration for the Cowboys’ franchise.
At 71 years old, Belichick is not inclined to embark on a team-rebuilding project. The Cowboys could provide the ideal opportunity for Belichick to join their ranks this offseason, with the potential for a Super Bowl run in the coming seasons.
Belichick’s best chance at taking the helm as the Cowboys’ head coach hinges on McCarthy’s fate, particularly in their upcoming showdown with Belichick’s former team, the Packers, this weekend.
The longer the Cowboys extend their playoff journey, the greater the likelihood that Belichick may find another suitor or the Cowboys could opt to retain McCarthy.
