Packers May Consider Carson Wentz As Backup QB Option

All of the focus of the Green Bay Packers this offseason has been on their quarterback situation. It sounds like a matter of time until Aaron Rodgers is traded to the New York Jets, which means the start of the Jordan Love era could be right around the corner.

Love was selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Utah State. The Packers actually traded up to select him, which is where the relationship with Rodgers began souring. It lit a fire under him, as he won the MVP award in 2020 and 2021 before an underwhelming 2022 season.

While nothing with Rodgers is official yet, the team should be preparing as though Love will be their starter. He hasn’t gotten many opportunities outside of the preseason, but there was a reason that they selected him in the first round.

The starting job will undoubtedly be his in 2023, health permitting. But, the need for a quarterback would still exist as the Packers are lacking a backup. A former NFL executive that spoke to NFL Analysis Network said that is something they are already exploring. One potential target for Green Bay is Carson Wentz.

“The Packers are looking at veteran options behind Jordan Love. One name I have heard that they are considering is Carson Wentz.”

Wentz was acquired by the Washington Commanders via trade from the Indianapolis Colts during the 2022 offseason. The team hoped he would help get them over the hump, but for the second straight season, when Went was needed most, he came up short.

As a result, the Commanders released him earlier in the offseason. There currently aren’t any starting jobs open around the league, likely leaving Wentz to seek out a backup job. It is a role that he could thrive in, as he has played well in spurts the last two seasons between the Colts and Commanders.

Not being counted on to carry an entire offense through the season, at this stage of his career, is likely best for Wentz. He would provide a team like the Packers with some insurance behind a young starter should an injury occur while also being a veteran mentor for Love to lean on.
