What To Expect From AJ Dillon In 2020
Let’s be honest, the Packers are not going to be leaning heavily on their rookie running back this season. Yes, LaFleur wanted a third running back that could take some carries off of the shoulders of both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. However, he isn’t looking for anyone to become a third 100 carry back.
Dillon is going to play some, but very modestly. He is going to be used specifically in short-yardage situations due to his size and strength.
ESPN has released league-wide projections and they included Dillon. They have the rookie running back carrying the football 58 times on the season for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Not bad for a rookie back who sits at No. 3 on the depth chart.
Green Bay does, however, have a running back that could take over long-term. With the Packers having to make a contract decision on Jones and Williams, Dillon could be the lead running back next season. Obviously, the Packers would love to have Jones back, but Dillon is a great insurance pick.
Fans absolutely have the right to be confused about the direction Gutekunst decided to go in the 2020 NFL Draft. But, they should be excited about the future having a hard-nosed running back like Dillon on their side. Just ask the Tennessee Titans how nice it is having a big back.
Expect to see the Packers get Dillon into the action a bit in his rookie season. He isn’t going to have a big role, but he could come in handy if short-yardage situations come around, especially on the goal line.
