Patriots: 3 late free agents New England should consider targeting

There may be a significant amount of confidence in Jarrett Stidham, but regardless, Cam Newton makes sense as an option for the New England Patriots. He has been given time to heal his body and was one of the more high-level quarterbacks in the NFL just a few seasons ago.

Newton has been working out with Odell Beckham Jr. and recently shared a video displaying some intriguing signs. It would be wise for the Patriots to at least bring the former NFL MVP in for a physical and a workout when possible to see if they believe he can hold up health-wise.

While it’s wise to at least not count Stidham out until he gets a real opportunity to showcase his abilities, it’s difficult to bank on it panning out. He’s only thrown four total passes in the NFL compared to Newton leading a team to a Super Bowl appearance.

The overall upside that comes with a quarterback like Newton is substantially higher than Stidham. It’s rare for a team to be able to land a player of Newton’s caliber in free agency and giving him the chance to at least compete for the starting job is an ideal low-risk, high-reward scenario.
