The Philadelphia Eagles are in need of some depth at wide receiver, and the Houston Texans have excess at the position. That makes the two sides a good match for a potential trade.
Jovan Alford of Section 215 suggests that the Eagles make a play for Texans wide out John Metchie III, who has fallen further on Houston’s depth chart after the club’s acquisition of Stefon Diggs.
Metchie, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Texans in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
He missed his entire rookie campaign due to leukemia, but he fortunately recovered to make it back on the field this past season. He played in 16 games but made minimal impact, logging just 16 catches for 158 yards. That was behind Nico Collins, Tank Dell and Noah Brown on the depth chart.
Now, imagine the lack of activity Metchie will likely end up seeing with Diggs in tow?
This certainly opens Metchie up for a trade, although his value may be very low given how unproductive he was in his debut season.
Of course, the Texans may be okay with a small return at this point, as Metchie isn’t really a needed piece for the club heading into 2024.
Philadelphia, on the other hand, could certainly utilize Metchie. It boasts one of the league’s best receiver tandems in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, but Philly doesn’t have much beyond those two.
Alford suggests that the Eagles could send a Day 3 pick to the Texans in exchange for Metchie, who probably wouldn’t be able to fetch Houston any more than that in a return.
It should also be noted that Metchie played with Smith at Alabama in 2019 and 2020, so there is a connection between those two players.
