Defense struggled
Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was able to find his groove against a stout Redskins defense.
In his second game back from a shoulder injury, Luck completed 21 of 31 passes, threw for 179 yards and passed two touchdowns and two interceptions. Luck and his most consistent target, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, ate up Washington’s secondary all afternoon as they connected for seven catches, 83 yards and a touchdown. Hilton put on a show as he toyed with veteran cornerback Josh Norman throughout the contest.
The Colts rushing attack, led by Jordan Wilkins and Marlon Mack, was able to shred Washington’s run defense with 104 yards on the ground, and rookie Nyheim Hines scored his first career touchdown later in the game.
There were a few bright spots from the defense as it was able to cause some key turnovers during the game. Safety D.J. Swearinger grabbed two interceptions from Luck and added three tackles to his statline, Linebacker Mason Foster led the team with eight tackles and defensive end Matthew Ioannidis had the lone sack of the contest.
Washington showed signs of an improved unit, but giving up 21 points at home isn’t the ideal way to go.
