Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars won their fifth game in a row in Week 8 when they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-10, and with a 6-2 record, it looked like perhaps they were becoming Super Bowl contenders.

But they were given a very harsh reality check this past Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers, who are legitimate Super Bowl contenders, pulverized them 34-3 on their own home field.

Third-year Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence had a nightmare outing, as he completed only 17 of 29 passes, threw two interceptions, had a fumble and was sacked five times. It was a reminder that he isn’t a truly elite QB, at least not yet.

That is what Richard Sherman, a former 49ers cornerback, wanted to world to know when he took to social media.

NFL News & Rumors: Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers Updates

He said on X, formally known as Twitter, that the Jaguars have been winning only in spite of Lawrence and that their defense deserves the praise for their 6-3 record.

On the season, Lawrence has thrown nine touchdown passes, but he also has six interceptions and seven fumbles. Therefore, it isn’t really a surprise that Jacksonville has committed more turnovers than all but two NFL teams to this point of the season.

Its defense, on the other hand, has forced more turnovers than any other team in the league. But in Week 10, it forced zero turnovers against a talent-laden Niners offense that has a cool and poised young QB in Brock Purdy.

There is no doubt that Jacksonville has plenty of potential moving forward. Lawrence has been lauded as a legitimate talent, and it has stud playmakers in wide receivers Christian Kirk and Calvin Ridley and running back Travis Etienne.

But winning a world championship is usually a long, arduous process that requires a team to have its heart broken, sometimes multiple times, before it’s ready to claim its sport’s ultimate prize. Lawrence and the Jaguars simply aren’t ready right now to seriously challenge for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
