At halftime of the NFC Championship Game, Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers found themselves trailing the Detroit Lions by a score of 24-7.
While there were still two quarters left to play, all hope looked lost.
The 49ers could not stop the Lions’ high-octane offense, and Purdy seemed to be proving all of his doubters right as he slumped through the first 30 minutes.
But then, Purdy did something in the locker room that he credits for propelling San Francisco to a thrilling 34-31 come-from-behind victory.
“When I’m down 17 at half, [I prayed], ‘all right, God, you’ve taken me here, win or lose I’m going to glorify you,’” Purdy said, via the 49ers’ official X account. “That’s my peace, that is the joy, the steadfastness.”
At that time of the prayer, Purdy was a meager 7-of-15 with 93 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Well, in the second half, he went 13-for-16 with 174 yards in guiding the Niners to huge comeback.
“That is where I get it from,” continued Purdy. That is the honest truth. I leaned into that. Sure enough, we were able to come back.”
The 49ers scored 27 unanswered points in the second half to take a 34-24 lead. Seventeen of those points came during the third quarter, when San Francisco tied the game.
Purdy, who was the last overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, says it is God who has taken him this far.
“Yeah, honestly, I think it’s a testament to God and where He’s taken me in life,” Purdy said. “I’ve never been the biggest, fastest, strongest, any of that.”
And yet, here is Purdy, with an opportunity to win a Super Bowl in what is his first full season as San Francisco’s starting quarterback.
Brock Purdy and the Niners will take on the Kansas City Chiefs for all the marbles on Feb. 11.
