San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has downplayed any possible tension between quarterback Brock Purdy and quarterbacks coach Brian Griese.
Recently, Griese admitted that he has heated discussions with Purdy, which obviously caught the attention of media members.
Shanahan was prompted about the relationship between Purdy and Griese this week, and he shrugged off the idea that things are a bit hairy.
“I don’t know exactly how it goes over there,” Shanahan said, via the 49ers’ official YouTube account. “They’re usually sitting down talking, but I get pretty heated. Griese handles me pretty well.”
Shanahan added that things are perfectly tame between Purdy and Griese.
“So I don’t think he’s out of control or anything,” he said. “If he was, I definitely would’ve pushed that button a number of times. Brock has that in him too. Brock’s a competitive dude. It’s not like he’s just going to sit there. I think we’re all kind of similar.”
Shanahan also said that he appreciated the fact that Purdy and Griese don’t pull any punches and that their animated conversations are actually healthy.
“We like to have honest real talks and when you do it throughout a football game it’s intense. You expect to have that,” Kyle Shanahan said. “If you ever work with someone who you don’t have those type of conversations with, it’s usually not that genuine of a relationship.”
Brock Purdy has enjoyed a terrific season, throwing for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 69.4 percent of his passes and posting a league-high passer rating of 113.
The Niners went 12-5 this year, earning a first-round bye. They will host the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs this Saturday.
