Seahawks Could Look To Make Shocking QB Change In Offseason

Geno Smith, Seattle Seahawks

Geno Smith has been quite the pleasant surprise for the Seattle Seahawks since replacing Russell Wilson under center last year, but could his time in the Pacific Northwest be running short?

Smith is under contract through 2025 after recently signing a three-year extension with the Seahawks, but Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk thinks the possibility exists for Seattle to part ways with Smith and pursue another veteran quarterback this coming offseason: Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield is currently on a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has been playing some terrific football. Through 15 games, he has thrown for 3,598 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 64.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 96.2.

It has been a massive resurgence for Mayfield, whose NFL career appeared to be on life support last season when he split the year between the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams, finishing with 10 touchdowns and eight picks.

Mayfield has said he wants to remain with the Buccaneers, but he will certainly be a hot commodity on the free-agent market come springtime.

Could the Seahawks cast their hats into the ring?

Smith was outstanding in 2022, leading the league in completion percentage (69.8 percent) while totaling 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also boasted a 100.9 passer rating.

This season, however, the 33-year-old has taken a rather significant step back, having recorded 3,145 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine picks with two games remaining in the regular season.

Of course, Smith has hardly been bad, but he is five years older than Mayfield and doesn’t possess the same raw talent as the former No. 1 overall pick.

Seattle has an impressive stable of receivers, so Mayfield could slot right in and feel right at home if he opts to join the Seahawks.

Right now, this is all speculation, but it would certainly be interesting if the Seahawks decided to pursue Mayfield after the season. It’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility.
