The Tennessee Titans didn’t partake in Black Monday as some of the other franchises around the NFL. Instead, they waited until Tuesday to make their changes, as it was announced that they fired head coach Mike Vrabel. The news was shared by ESPN insider Adam Schefter on X, formerly Twitter.

There had been some rumors swirling that Vrabel’s job was in jeopardy after the Titans suffered their second consecutive losing season. That came on the heels of four straight winning seasons Vrabel had to begin his Titans tenure, including the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a 12-5 record during the 2021 season.

Overall, Vrabel had a record of 54-45 in six seasons with the Titans, going 2-3 in the postseason with one AFC Championship appearance. The Titans are now the sixth job opening in the NFL and there are rumors that there could be a seventh by the end of the week.

That is when we should have a final determination on the status of Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots. He will be meeting with Robert Kraft and have a chance to lay out a plan on how to get the team back on track.

NFL News & Rumors: Will Levis, Ryan Tannehill, Mike Vrabel, Tennessee Titans Updates

Should the Patriots move on from Belichick, Vrabel is expected to be a top contender for the head coaching job in New England. The now-former Titans head coach is going to be one of the most popular names on the coaching circuit this offseason should he wish to continue coaching somewhere else.

The Titans’ decision to fire Vrabel feels like one that has been in the making. An injury to starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill during the 2022 season derailed Tennesse, who held a commanding lead in the AFC South with a 7-3 record before finishing the season on a seven-game losing streak.

This season, another injury to Tannehill occurred, leading to rookie Will Levis being thrust into the starting lineup. On top of that, a new regime in the front office led by Ran Carthon led to some veterans being moved in the offseason and ahead of the trade deadline, putting Vrabel and the Titans at a competitive disadvantage some weeks.

Now a free agent, Vrabel is going to make one franchise very happy this offseason around the NFL. He will be coveted while the Titans will begin their search in what has the looks of a bit of a rebuild being on the horizon.
