The Los Angeles Rams surprised a lot of people when they used a fourth-round pick, No. 128 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, on Georgia quarterback, Stetson Bennett. Bennett had a decorated collegiate career but in the opinion of a lot of evaluators, had a lot working against him to find success at the next level.
Bennett was surrounded by elite talent at Georgia, which certainly helped when it came to his production. His measurables and age were seen as a detriment as well. Standing only 5’11 and turning 26 in October, what you see is likely what you’ll get from Bennett in the NFL.
Well, if what he has been doing in practice would translate to games, the Rams would be pretty happy about the outcome. Bennett was given the chance to lead the first-team offense earlier this week with Matthew Stafford on a rest day and he performed very well.
According to NFL Rookie Watch on Twitter, Bennett has reportedly already surpassed Brett Rypien for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Rypien was a free agent signing by the Rams this offseason after spending the first three seasons of his career with the Denver Broncos.
Looking to improve in any way possible, Bennett has also been talking to and working closely with Stafford. He wants to absorb as much information as possible to put himself in the best position to succeed when his number is called.
What makes some of those highlights in the video even more impressive is that a majority of it came without star wide receiver Cooper Kupp in the mix. Kupp exited practice very early as he is dealing with a hamstring injury.
Despite not having his No. 1 option, Bennett still put some good performance on tape. It will be interesting to see how he handles himself in the preseason as the Rams are likely going to give him as many reps as he can handle with Stafford likely being held out to keep him healthy for the regular season.
