2019 second-round pick Trayvon Mullen appeared to come into his own down the final stretch of last season. He has the No.1 cornerback spot on lockdown heading into 2020 but as the team entered draft day, they still needed to find the former Clemson Tiger a counterpart to play opposite of him on the outside.
With that said, the Raiders drafted Damon Arnette despite him being mocked by many as a day two selection. During his time at Ohio State, Arnette showed the proper traits to become a starting cornerback in the NFL but typically rookie cornerbacks take longer than most positions to finally get settled into their role.
After the draft, the Raiders added a safety net for Arnette, signing veteran cornerback Prince Amukamara to a one-year deal. Amukamara has been a starter for the majority of his nine-year career but his assignment with the Raiders will likely be to split time with Arnette during his rookie season.
Lamarcus Joyner will once again pencil in at slot cornerback but after last season where he experienced career-lows in several statistical categories, the Raiders brought abroad one of the better slot options in the 2020 draft, adding Amik Robertson. The former Louisiana Tech defender provides the Raiders with an additional option to rotate in and out behind Joyner, giving them depth at the slot position.
At safety, they have Jonathan Abram returning but he’ll still have to work out the kinks as he only played one game last season before going on season-ending injured reserve. Alongside Abram, the Raiders added Damarious Randall, who’s played cornerback and safety — so he should give them someone who can match up against tight ends and big-body pass-catchers on the backend.
