Aside from Ohio State edge rusher Chase Young, Isaiah Simmons is considered by most as the best defensive prospect entering this year’s draft.
In 2019, Simmons did a little bit of everything for his Clemson defense. He accumulated 104 total tackles, seven sacks, one forced fumble and three interceptions.
He’s a do-it-all linebacker who can play any linebacker spot in a 4-3 defense. The Chargers run a 4-3 and could certainly use some help at their linebacker positions.
According to Pro Football Focus, Los Angeles’ highest ranking linebacker was strong side linebacker Drue Tranquill, grading out as the 25th best strong side LB in football last season.
Middle linebacker Thomas Davis played pretty well last season, recording 112 total tackles. But, at 36-years-old he may only have a year or two left in him.
Simmons would be a great option to eventually take over for Davis as the quarterback of the defense. Not to mention, having Davis as a mentor would be amazing for Simmons’ development.
If Simmons is still on the board when the Chargers are on the clock, they’d be foolish to pass him up.
